First Aid

Shock:
Shock is a dangerous condition in which not enough oxygen-rich blood is reaching vital organs in the body.  It is a life-threatening emergency.


                   Symptoms of shock are:
                    Cool clammy skin
                    Rapid shallow breathing
                    Anxiety/Confusion
                    Dizziness, light-headedness
                    Nausea/Vomiting

Do not let a person experiencing shock eat, drink or smoke.

Bloody nose:
1. For a bloody nose lean the head forward NOT backward!
2. Use gauze to pinch the soft area just below the bridge of the nose.

Burns
1. Run cool water over the burn for 15-30 minutes.
2. DO NOT use ice or petroleum jelly!

Fire
1. Be sure area is safe.

2. Stop, drop & roll
3. Cover victim with blankets soaked with water.
4. Remove burned clothing or jewelry if it is not stuck to the skin.

Injury Emergency

    Bleeding you can see

1.      Be sure the area is safe

2.      Use personal protection equipment (latex or vinyl gloves)

3.      Use pressure & gauze

a.       Do NOT remove any bloody gauze, always add more gauze

Lift bleeding arm or leg if you can do so without causing pain

 

Amputation

1.      Be sure area is safe

2.      Phone 911

3.      Use personal protection equipment

4.      Use pressure & gauze

 

The amputated body part

1.      Rinse with clean water

2.      Cover with clean gauze

3.      Place in water tight bag

4.      Place in another bag with ice and label with victims name to be taken to the hospital

 

DO NOT place amputated body part directly on ice as extreme cold can injure the body part
